A very family friendly site welcoming tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes. Located to the south east of Wells-Next-The-Sea. This off-grid campsite offers a happy and free style camping experience and community vibe. The facilities are okay, but it's obvious your paying for the location and proximity to the town and local attractions.
Location
South east of Well-Next-The-Sea, North Norfolk.
Access
It’s worth checking Google maps to confirm your approach as there are many narrow roads. When approaching from the West, you will need to drive through part of Well-Next-The-Sea via Burnt Street. Although narrow at parts, it’s fairly straight so it’s easy to see any oncoming traffic. This road appears to be a main thoroughfare when passing the town.
Pitch & Costs
We paid £26 per night (£14 per pitch per night & £6 per adult per night, July 2022).
All pitches are grass and do not have electric. This is an off-grid campsite.
Our Stay & Our Thoughts
As part of our August 2022 North Norfolk tour I was keen to visit Wells-Next-To-The-Sea. I had fond memories of visiting there as a child and was keen to show the place to Ash. Leaving our booking a little late with the kids been of school then, all the sites were booked up.
That’s how we found Blue Skies. At first, we were put off seen as the site is off grid. Something that we had never done before but seen as we both wanted to go to Wells and after watching a few YouTube videos on off griding we decided to give it ago.
The site is family friendly and welcomes Tents, Caravans and Motorhomes. It is located just off the A149 just on the edge of the village. Upon turning into the site which as a wide entrance we pulled up in front of the site reception. We where meet by the friendly staff who directed us to the pitch.
The site does have a bit of a slope so be prepared to level the van with ramps and make sure you have some blocks for under the steadies. It has the usual facilities that you would expect (apart for electric) Elsan pint, water, and Bins. Also has clean Toilets and showers housed in what look like beach huts. Also has a children’s play area. Reception stocks the essentials in case you have forgotten anything, alongside snacks, disposable BBQ’s and Ice Packs available to rent. Quite time is after 10PM. If you need other supplies there is a Co-op a 10-minute walk away from the site in Wells. Also whilst we where at the site a street food van came that sold Belgium waffles which we would highly recommend trying out!
There is plenty of things to do in Wells and the surrounding area. The bustling quayside is just a 15 minute walk away from the site. With amazing views of the salt marshes and the sea beyond. Here you will find families enjoys crabbing from the quayside as well as fish and chip shops if you fancy a seaside favourite. There are also plenty of shops restaurants and pubs. If you like cider we would recommend the Whinhill Norfolk Cider Ciderworks.
Walking down the side of there harbour towards the lifeboat station brings you down to the stunning Holkham beach with its famous beach huts. A perfect place to relax on a summers day.
To the West of Wells you will find the stunning Holkham Hall built by Thomas Coke, the first Earl of Leicester, between 1734 and 1764. To the east for nature lovers there is the seal colonies and bird sanctuary at Blakeney Point, accessible via regular daily boat trips.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at Blue Skies. We manged just fine without an electric hook up. Our solar panel kept our battery toped up and everything else ran on gas. The staff at the site are great and super helpful. The toilets and showers are cleaned regularly. If you are after a base for you and the family to explore Wells and the surrounding area you should check it out.
